Dear Irving

55 Irving Pl, New York, NY 10003 · website

A speakeasy-style cocktail bar on Irving Place with period-themed rooms and serious drinks. They reserve bar seats and half their tables for walk-ins in case you forgot to get a reservation (and if all else fails just walk to L'Americana across the street)

↓ 3 minute walk
Stop 2 — Comedy Show
The Stand comedy club The Stand interior The Stand stage

The Stand

116 E 16th St, New York, NY 10003 · website

One of NYC's best comedy clubs. Shared laughter is the ultimate shortcut to chemistry. Grab seats, share a few drinks during the show, and you've got inside jokes for the rest of the night.

↓ 4 minute walk
Stop 3 — Late-Night Drinks
Pete's Tavern exterior Pete's Tavern bar Pete's Tavern interior

Pete's Tavern

129 E 18th St, New York, NY 10003 · website · opentable

NYC's oldest continuously operating bar, since 1864. The kind of place where O. Henry wrote stories and you'll write yours. Grab a booth, order one more round, and let the night wind down naturally.

The Strategy

Start at Dear Irving around 7pm for a cocktail, just enough to break the ice. Bar seats and half the tables are walk-in only, so just show up. From there's its a 3-minute walk to the Stand for a comedy show (check their schedule ahead of time and grab tickets). Comedy is the secret weapon: you're sitting close, laughing together, and there's zero pressure to carry the conversation. After the show, walk to Pete's Tavern for an adult happy meal: burger & fries to split, caesar salad (they do a great one) and a martini. Normally I'd steer clear of booths on a first date, but if you've gotten this far it provides a nice intimate touch.

Field Notes

Do I need to book Dear Irving ahead of time?
They hold bar seats and half their tables for walk-ins. Show up, you're fine. If somehow it's slammed, L'Americana is right across the street — same energy, no problem.
How far in advance do I need to grab comedy tickets?
Check the schedule when you're planning the date, not the day of. Weekend shows move. Weeknight shows are usually fine last minute but don't risk it.
What if the comedy show is terrible?
Doesn't matter. Shared suffering is still shared. You'll be talking about the worst bit all night — that's the chemistry working.
Skip Pete's or stay?
If the show ends and it's still clicking, don't overthink it — walk to Pete's. The booth is the signal the night isn't over. If the vibe dropped, the comedy show is a clean exit. No awkward "should we get another drink?"
