52 Irving Pl, New York, NY 10003 · website · opentable · ~$80-100 (tapas + wine)
Spanish tapas on Irving Place from the Mario Batali era that's still delivering. Share everything โ that's the whole point. The small plates are legit and the wine list is deep. Tight space which forces you closer together, and sharing food on a first date is always the move.
125 E 15th St, New York, NY 10003 · website · ~$40-55 (2-3 pints each)
Chill Irish pub on 15th with cheap pints and a dart board. The shift from tapas bar to Irish pub takes the pressure off completely. Nobody's trying too hard here and that's exactly the point. Low-key way to close out the night without forcing a big finish.
Start at Seven Sins around 6pm for cocktails on 3rd Ave. It's a solid opener โ moody without being try-hard. After a round, walk over to Casa Mono on Irving Place for Spanish tapas. If things are going well, suggest one more at Shades of Green a few blocks south. Going from cocktails to tapas to an Irish pub shows range and takes the pressure off. The whole route stays within a few blocks of Union Square. Total damage: $170-225 for a three-stop night.
